Hand Tingling
Causes of Hand Numbness
Numbness in the hands, along with cramps and tingling, can occur for non-pathological reasons. For example, an incorrect sleeping position can restrict blood flow and cause these sensations. However, in some cases, the problem may also affect other parts of the body, such as the legs or feet, and may not necessarily be related to posture, as discussed below.
Repetitive Activities and Overuse
Overloading the hand joints is often caused by repetitive manual activities. Jobs such as typing on a computer, using tools, or sewing can lead to nerve strain, resulting in tingling sensations. Continuous bending and stretching of the hand joints can create tension, especially in occupations that require intensive use of the hands, such as designers and programmers. Interestingly, numbness is often more noticeable at night when there is no movement and nerves and tendons may experience increased pressure.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome primarily affects the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, as confirmed by various studies. This condition is linked to a neuropathy that causes compression of the median nerve at the wrist. This compression leads to symptoms such as numbness and pain, which can also impair mobility. Reduced sensitivity and hand numbness are common manifestations of this disorder, and symptoms are often more noticeable at night.
